Here's my comparison at the same scale of hourly-or-better train service in NYC and London
Colors distinguish types of services, e.g. red = metro, pink = light and medium capacity, blue = suburban local, green = regional branching; grey = shuttles; white = intercity.
Public transport outwith London is a huge source of frustration in the UK.
Especially Manchester-Liverpool, Glasgow-Edinburgh, and generally across northern England.

I made this to show the stark difference between London and NYC, especially the regional scales
If I did any other cities in the US (or Canada) it would be even more stark ... in almost every case, the map would be nearly blank
