I remember reading a very chilling point during my master's degree, that in order for genocide to happen, first it must be imagined.
People must first imagine a world without the outgroup, before they can bring that world into being. All genocide starts with the power of human imagination.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.
This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.
