there's a constant game of *how much* explicit support they'll receive -- my book with Jon Michaels gets into the law on this -- but we're well past the point where anyone could reasonably question whether support for militias and vigilantes is a central part of MAGA politics.

a couple details worth highlighting. one is the makeup of militia members. the reporter, joshua kaplan, expected to find a lot of ex-cops but recordings of meetings show the militia's ranks were full of white collar professionals.

That brings unfortunate memories of the GWOT back; in AFG, when insurgents were the societal linchpins and movers & shakers like lawyers, judges, university personel, and teachers was when I was convinced the Taliban would ultimately win there.

Not a welcome thought domestically.

the other is the claimed relationship among the current Oath Keepers leader, Bobby Kinch, the sheriff for Iron County, Utah, and the Utah AG's office. while not part of the same organization, they share an ideological affinity and--per Kinch--the militia elevated issues to the AG via the sheriff.
