It's like in vids about true crime they'll use this silly coded language so they can keep a light tone about a husband killing his entire family. Wouldn't want it to be too heavy. Yippee!
I think the word "sewer slide" is hilarious but I do think code words shouldn't be compulsory when trying to have a serious conversation about things on the Internet. :( People who die by suicide or those who struggle w suicidal ideation should be able to discuss and be discussed with dignity
I personally find it much better to just say those words instead of adding a trigger warning before every mention of death related topics. makes for a better experience without sacrificing anyone spiraling.
a lot of trauma isn't triggered by a specific word but by the idea/discussion of their trigger. a person affected by SA knows what you're talking about when you say "grape". trigger warnings are very helpful for self selecting if you are interested & safely able to participate
idk, my personal experience has only had me start thinking about doing *it* when the actual word came up. It's always nice to have a safety guard up anyways.
I hate how this language has seeped into the real world. At my university the content warning for auditions for a play used unalive. Thinking about it just makes mad. It’s a content warning. You need to be as clear as possible. What censorship are you trying to avoid on a printed out piece of paper?
I feel confident in saying youtube straight up doesn't punish you for mentioning suicide directly having done so multiple times, and if you're still worried just use the million other acceptable phrases that already exist ("took their own life" etc). this is so embarrassing!!
to add on, I mentioned pedophilia accusations directly in all of my Mr Beast videos and the only strike I ever got was for bullying Mr Beast. even ignoring that "child predator" already exists, there is absolutely no need for "pdf file"
Ive seen a Simpsons clip censoring the word ”weiner” (explicitly in the sausage context mind) into ”winner” I hate algorithm-motivated self censorship so fucking much
The file one annoys me so much because it never sounds right and it makes you not want to embrace PDFs, which are a cool type of file that I want to find uses for.
YouTube doesn't treat everyone the same,
I've seen some channels get away for years with shit that sees smaller (gayer) channels obliterated first time.
i hate the use of "pdf file" in this context because i read a lot of books n stuff on archiveorg and the vast majority are pdf scans. its like, don't rope those into this!!!
I've seen people self-censor words like "predator", too, which is wild, because that's one of those terms that exist in different contexts, too? Half waiting for someone to make a video about lions or something, and awkwardly calling them "animals that hunt other animals".
unironically this is rly helpful to hear, as a newer youtuber it’s hard to find info about what does and doesn’t get you demonetised so it’s easier to err on the side of caution (in theory. personally i would not be caught dead saying unalive)
That's the crazy part to me. There's other wording, there's f*****g BLEEPING that has been around since the caveman days, but no, I'm gonna say le funny word guys, I'm so naughty, please don't punish me Mr. Yu Tube.
It's at least somewhat tolerable when it's some dumb gaming video, but doing this kind of shit in something remotely serious is insane, actual brainrot to be talking about something horrific that happen to a real person and calling it "unaliving."
Once saw someone refer to an assassination attempt as “Pew-pew based attempted unaliving of a public figure” and they used that whole phrase each time and I nearly threw my phone in rage
Everyone has something they hate about English. Some people hate when it evolves beyond their control due to trends.
I personally hate how it's an incomplete language that doesn't adapt all of its words thoroughly enough to make spelling consistent with its sound (like the languages it pulls from)

As if companies are banning every mention of the word "kill" but can't figure out what the secret "unalive" codeword means. Give me a break.

Or they could just bleep it.
