"What if the president of the United States does all sorts of crazy shit to both the American political order and the American economy and in response the markets just . . . shrug? Because so far, that’s exactly what is happening."

So long as they get theirs it’s all gravy. When have the wealthiest and most powerful ever really resisted over indulgence. They can crash the economy and still be fine - probably even get a bailout.
It's happening because money doesn't care and those who have a lot of it are screwing around figuring out how to make this work for them instead of how to stop it
That will eventually chg when ppl can no longer afford to buy crap or go out to eat or go on vacation. Hasn’t happened yet but it will. Stay tuned. #

It's early, people are still figuring out how much is bluster and how much is real. We're almost certainly going to enter a nasty recession before the 2026 midterms, so things will be a lot clearer later on.
Because democracy and capitalism are different things. One can exist without the other - see China. Capitalism is an economic system and democracy is a political system.
When the plutocrats who own the majority of the stock market are in charge, and average citizens have their stock wealth locked in with 401ks they can't touch, well, who's left to panic? Corporations are falling in line to carve up the Republic. It's a feast - for now.
I think they’re…paralyzed? On the one hand you have tariffs and mass deportations. On the other hand, you have regulatory bodies in danger of shutdown (e.g. CFRB).
It's almost like the markets are mostly directed by those with a lot of money, and those people are going to be just fine and don't care. They got theirs.
Orrrr, the market has never had a direct correlation to leadership. If Wall Street shrugs, and the markets are actually effected, then they're in trouble right? Can someone please explain why we should care about this?
The markets should react to the happenings in this country. Things he and the government do will directly correlate to Wall streets “fear” gauge. As well as job numbers, company profits, foreign policy, etc. the markets will go down, A LOT.
All do respect, Yes I understand how the markets work. The author is claiming Wall Street is ignoring the signs of a Trump effected economy. My question is why we should care if the market proves their position wrong?
Imagine if any other CEO went full Nazi, like Musk did. Actually….at this point in our history, none of those scumbag CEOs (or investors) care. TSLA *should* have cratered the next day.
I sold all of my Tesla shares the day he did that first rally with trump. And liquidated my whole portfolio a week ago when Trump put the tariffs in. Going sit on cash for the next couple of months, can't deal with the anxiety of a Black Swan.
As a market participant I can tell you that the market anticipates earnings trends. The market has held in because earnings (and the economy) have held in. That will change at some point.

He always says stuff and then backs off.
Looks like it won't react too much until something hugely stupid actually occurs.
I'm not so sure there will be consequences.
Trump will let Corp America do whatever it wants to juice its profits and they will collectively ignore anything they don't like.
And Trump will pay out to his friends to keep them whole.
Musk will get contracts. Other contracts will be "deep state corruption".

I’m not surprised by this at all.
