"I did not understand that Trump could find another authoritarian regime willing to accept America’s prisoners in exchange for payment. This innovation is the equivalent of authoritarianism making the jump across the blood/brain barrier."

"They put a 90 day timeline as opposed to an open-ended timeline, which is only gonna say there's gonna be more uncertainty. They've just lengthened the uncertainty." Trump's tariffs are a "wrecking ball" to the economy. Jon Corzine joins John Avlon:

"As the grim cavalcade of news about the Trump administration’s mass deportation program continues, it’s worth paying attention to the places where that program appears to be on its shakiest footing." ICYMI @adriancarrasquillo.bsky.social on successful pressure campaigns:

"Though I wasn’t being compelled to appear, I didn’t feel like I had a choice; it was an opportunity to directly challenge the folks who have used a conspiracy theory to decimate our nation’s response to foreign disinformation." ICYMI:

"Trump cannot assuage the bond market. He cannot convince it that he is 'normal' and should be given the benefit of the doubt. He cannot scare it into submission. He cannot bribe it. The bond market is not like the Supreme Court or Paul Weiss or Columbia."

"Charm does not emanate from him or his writing to win modern readers. When he died, whatever moment Sam Francis had once had was long past. Until Trump. Really, it’s the sense of prescience that has remade him." ICYMI @joshuatait.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/radical-ri...

"A microcosm of a nation, in a small but mighty way, making something right. People coming together to right a historical wrong says something about the enduring promise of this country." ICYMI @markhertling.bsky.social on Operation Benjamin: www.thebulwark.com/p/operation-...

For the House GOP, "it would be an unconscionable risk to allow a panicked or aggrieved bipartisan coalition to revoke the president’s unilateral authority to impose the tariffs." ICYMI @cheetah.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/do-congres...

"Donald Trump’s erratic and foolish actions have turned the most desirable financial haven in the world into a whirlpool of risk. The safest way to conduct business now is to avoid the United States to the greatest extent possible."

RFK's long history of vaccine skepticism doesn't give him "only Nixon can go to China" credibility to endorse a vaccine; it just makes his followers wonder if even *he's* been gotten to. ICYMI @willsommer.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/rfks-anti-...

Trump's assault is not a good-faith reconsideration of the excesses of DEI. It is "far more an attack on the real diversity that characterizes today’s America, the real equity that a nation can aspire to, the real inclusion that marks a healthy society."

"When our economic actions lack transparency or coherence, when they seem impulsive rather than strategic, we alienate allies and embolden adversaries." Trust underpins prosperity. ICYMI @markhertling.bsky.social:

[email protected] responds to @sarahlongwell25.bsky.social's focus group clips of moderates vs. progressives: "I was watching them blindly, and I had to go back and be like, which one am I listening to? I'm so confused right now. You can't tell." *All* the Democratic voters want to fight.

"The president is no longer bound by law, but he is protected by laws. The same laws that now permit him to, say, instruct Seal Team Six to assassinate the chief justice, also provide for him to complete his presidential term."

"Donald Trump's tariffs are so punishing that even the houses in Monopoly are going to get more expensive. And I do mean that literally." ICYMI @citizencohn.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-tari...

The phenomenon of prominent Democrats not acting like they really believe American democracy is facing an existential crisis is starting to really upset Democratic voters, Big Law edition. ICYMI @lauren-egan.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/big-backla...

It's only been 11 weeks, but so much has happened and so much damage has been done, it's already time for Dems to pitch their own "Contract with America." ICYMI @jilldlawrence.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/time-democ...

All this, along with putting a 2020 Big Lie Trump ally in charge of DOJ's Civil Rights Division www.thebulwark.com/p/justice-de...

America’s president doesn’t mind if his administration’s actions weaken the United States—so long as he gains more domestic power for himself. To him that counts as a good deal. ICYMI: www.thebulwark.com/p/high-cost-...

An official at the firm told The Bulwark that, as of this morning, 205 of the more than 400 signatories had attached their actual names to the letter. The others signed anonymously. The firm employs roughly 4,000 lawyers globally.

Lourdes, an undocumented farmworker, "said the country should focus on legalizing those who have spent their lives putting food on Americans’ tables rather than expanding guest-worker programs to bring others in to compete with or replace them."

"Trump cannot assuage the bond market. He cannot convince it that he is 'normal' and should be given the benefit of the doubt. He cannot scare it into submission. He cannot bribe it. The bond market is not like the Supreme Court or Paul Weiss or Columbia."

Despite all the crazy of his first term, Trump voters appreciated that the pre-COVID economy was booming. During the 2024 campaign, they wanted to go back to that. That isn't what's happening, and they notice it. ICYMI @sarahlongwell25.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/voters-can...

"Charm does not emanate from him or his writing to win modern readers. When he died, whatever moment Sam Francis had once had was long past. Until Trump. Really, it’s the sense of prescience that has remade Francis."

"The white Stars of David in American cemeteries from Arlington to the Philippines to Western Europe are powerful, silent retorts to the age-old charge of dual loyalty." On the organization that ensures Jewish Americans rest under the sign of their faith:

American presidents decades from now will still be cleaning up what Trump did to this country in 2025. The mess is made, and it's too late to avoid the pain. @davidfrum.bsky.social joins @jvl.bsky.social, in for Tim, on today's Bulwark Podcast:

"Harmeet Dhillon is an ardent culture warrior and will likely be a major figure in the administration’s war on DEI. But even more pernicious would be a policy—likely unofficial—of looking the other way on police abuse."

"I’m not used to a president of France having a better understanding of the preconditions for sound business investment and sustained economic growth than a president of the United States."

"'It kind of proves that Trump’s a good dealmaker,' Sen. Chuck Grassley told reporters. 'In fact, I’d like to hire him to buy some farmland for me in Iowa. I think it brings predictability and shows moderation.'" You were thinking that too, right?

In the latest episode of George Conway Explains It All, @gtconway.bsky.social and @sarahlongwell25.bsky.social discuss the Alien Enemies Act, the deportations, Trump's executive orders against law firms, and more. Watch or listen:

The Supreme Court—once again—does not understand the reality in which it exists. You know what can’t be bullied, deceived, or manipulated? The bond market. Today's Triad from @jvl.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-fina...

NEW from @samsteindc.bsky.social: Hundreds of associates at the law firm A&O Shearman have openly put their names on a letter pleading with leadership not to settle with the Trump administration, which is targeting the firm.

The administration has had to slow down or even abandon individual deportations in the face of strong popular resistance. And now the president is signaling another huge exception to his deportation policy. The latest Huddled Masses from @adriancarrasquillo.bsky.social:

"Francis denied being a white nationalist. But his later efforts directly involved raising the political consciousness of whites as a bloc." @joshuatait.bsky.social on the paleocons and the rediscovery of Sam Francis:

"This unique organization provides comfort to families and enables visitors to better appreciate the sacrifice in the cause of democracy and freedom made by Jewish Americans." Solemn, but a bright spot. New from @markhertling.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/operation-...

"This is amazing stuff coming from a Republican-controlled Congress that just spent the last few years repeatedly taking the nation to the brink of government shutdown or debt default." More bad math! Today's Morning Shots from @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social and @eggerdc.bsky.social:

For the past seven decades, the DOJ's Civil Rights Division has acted as a sort of police of the police. Not under its new head Harmeet Dhillon. New from @blanksslate.bsky.social:

"The real diehards see Chaya Raichik as part of a group of MAGA influencers who are trotted out occasionally to create the illusion that Trump is delivering for his base." Enjoy the inter-MAGA drama:

"Right now, this administration is delivering real, negative consequences for people in a way that is personal, and can be felt in their day-to-day lives. It’s Democrats’ job to make sure they know who’s to blame."

Perhaps it wasn’t obsequiousness that swept through the Capitol yesterday; it was relief. For now, the president is still at least somewhat responsive to external pressure.

"Tariffs can be a useful tool. I’ll let you in on a secret: All tools can be useful in the right situation." Now is not the time for that point, and this is not the right situation.

ICYMI: Trump's English-as-the-official-language order is doubly bad: it makes people's lives harder, and it falsely validates the smear that immigrants are entitled and don't want to bother learning English.

If Trump did actually believe that he could charm Putin into dropping or suspending his war of aggression against Ukraine - which is not clear anyway - he was wrong about the Russian dictator's pliability.

"Bongino's audience has been told for years that prominent liberals and deep-state operatives have committed blatant crimes against the Trump family that should be easy to prosecute. Yet no top Democrats have been indicted." Falling down on the job there?

The Democratic party may universally believe that Trump’s approach will cause catastrophic damage to the economy. But intellectually, many members are not fully comfortable unabashedly criticizing the administration’s tariffs.

"Someone says oh my God, we have wrongfully deported somebody and they are in prison in a foreign country, what should we do about it? And the adult in the room is not saying 'get that person back here immediately.'" @weissmann11.bsky.social talks cruelty and lawlessness with @timmiller.bsky.social
