"If we buy coffee from Costa Rica and they buy nothing from us (which isn’t true, but just as an illustration), in no sense has Costa Rica taken advantage of America. We gave them dollars and they gave us coffee in return. That is called commerce."

The dollar being the world's reserve currency is really important, and it is in our interest that it remains so. Guess what Trump's trade war risks doing to that arrangement. ICYMI, the latest episode of How To Fix It with John Avlon, joined by Jon Corzine:

"I can think of three options to explain the mindset of the chief justice. Delusional. Scared. Or clever."

"Sam Francis didn’t think the early conservative intellectuals were really serious. Interest in such an amoral, seductively pessimistic writer says more about the nature of the right today—and our moment—than anything else."

"'Greed is the only answer that makes sense to me,' said one associate at a targeted firm, expressing exasperation with those who have settled."

"You can hear my almost visceral howl of rage when I describe what might be the stupidest thing I’ve ever read: the folks who think Warfare is a piece of pro-war propaganda. I cannot stress enough that this read on the movie is incorrect." @sonnybunch.bsky.social:

It is difficult to convey precisely what is happening at HHS—how it’s so unprecedented and why it’s so destructive—because the changes are happening in so many places throughout the department simultaneously, and with no transparency.

Neera Tanden on the difference with Trump 2.0: "Trump number two is far scarier. All of the consequences are more grave. The genuinely scary thing to me is how many independent institutions are bending the knee, and nobody really did that before."

"If you were Chris Krebs, would you flee the country? Your answer before last week would probably be 'no.' Your answer after last week is probably 'maybe.' Your answer after the coming week might be 'absolutely.'"

"Expressing trust in God is in the American tradition. But that trust is to be understood *in contrast* with excessive trust in our fellow men."

Trump’s combination of tariffs and deportations has rattled farmers and growers in California, who provide more than a third of the nation’s vegetables and more than three quarters of the country’s fruits and nuts. www.thebulwark.com/p/farmers-tr...

@sarahlongwell25.bsky.social joined @morningjoe-msnbc.bsky.social to break down new focus group data showing growing Trump voter dissatisfaction—especially over rising prices and tariffs

"When government officials—especially those with badges and guns—violate Americans’ rights rather than protecting them, it often falls to the DOJ's Civil Rights Division to enforce the law against law enforcement." Get ready to say goodbye to all that.

Trump not only refuses to comply with the Roberts ruling, but he has now completely mischaracterized it. What will the Supreme Court do in response? That’s the question we’re working through today. Today's Triad from @jvl.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/what-is-jo...

LIVE NOW: @jvl.bsky.social and @eggerdc.bsky.social are reacting now to Trump's presser with El Salvador's Bukele

President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele: "Mr. President, you have 350 million people to liberate. But to liberate 350 million people, you have to imprison some."

"We need a more, not progressive, but aggressive, approach." @sarahlongwell25.bsky.social and @lauren-egan.bsky.social discuss Democratic voters and the desire to fight Trump harder in the latest episode of The Focus Group podcast:

"Now, finally, here was Kennedy in his familiar, raspy voice, lending his full endorsement as health and human services secretary. Except that’s not what he did." @citizencohn.bsky.social on RFK Jr.'s non-walkback on vaccine skepticism: www.thebulwark.com/p/dont-be-fo...

"If you walk around saying ‘Donald Trump is an existential threat, and I’m gonna fight tooth and nail to stop him’ then people are gonna expect you to do that." @lauren-egan.bsky.social interviews @neeratanden.bsky.social on resisting Trump and more:

Trump’s waffling indecision betrays his weak hand. His sycophants can gurgle about the “art of the deal” all they like—it’s plain these guys are making this all up as they go along. Trade war edition. Today's Morning Shots from @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social and @eggerdc.bsky.social:

"If Bukele affirmatively refuses to repatriate Abrego Garcia, it will mean that Trump has told him not to. At which point the Supreme Court will face a choice. Surrender or escalation?" An emergency Triad from JVL: www.thebulwark.com/p/bukele-abr...

"This is not the art of the deal. It’s the destruction of stability and the start of a long, slow slide into a vortex."

"It sounds like Trump is getting ready to carve out exemptions from his deportation regime for agricultural workers. After all, Trump is right—bear with me—that farms have a special need for immigrant labor." ICYMI @adriancarrasquillo.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/farmers-tr...

"The petty tyranny of local law enforcement could, particularly in places with Republican-dominated state and local governments, reverse more than six decades of gradual progress under the civil rights regime." ICYMI @blanksslate.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/justice-de...

Like RFK Jr., Dan Bongino is finding out that selling exaggerated or made-up BS to an audience for years doesn't give you credibility when you can't follow through; it makes them think even *you're* compromised.

"An emergency Sunday Triad, because I’m concerned that people don’t appreciate how important this week will be for American democracy and our constitutional order. Buckle up." www.thebulwark.com/p/bukele-abr...

The turmoil and deprivation of growing up in poverty dramatically increases the chances a child will eventually fall behind in school, struggle in the adult workplace or—in the worst cases—end up in the criminal justice system. Trump will make it worse.

"If you’re an average person who took a flyer on Trump, and you look at prices spiking, growth stalling, stocks plummeting—are you feeling confident in what you’re seeing?"

"Even so, Ukraine agreed—while Russia demanded extra concessions." One side does in fact want the war to continue. ICYMI @cathyyoung63.bsky.social on how Putin scuttled Trump's "peace" effort:

“In my case I like to take a nice shower, to take care of my beautiful hair. I have to stand under the shower for 15 minutes till it gets wet. It comes out drip, drip, drip.”

Trump's approval rating on the economy is dropping. @sarahlongwell25.bsky.social joined @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social today on Bulwark on Sunday to explain why that gradual slide matters.

Q: “How concerned are you about what’s happening to the U.S. Dollar?” Lutnick: “I am not.”

The Democratic party may universally believe that Trump’s approach will cause catastrophic damage to the economy. But intellectually, many members are not fully comfortable unabashedly criticizing the administration’s tariffs. ICYMI @lauren-egan.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/democrats-...

"He declared himself the victim of a corrupt system, blamed all his losses on cheating, demanded enough compensation to cancel out his losses, and launched an assault to get his way." 2020 or the trade war? ICYMI @saletan.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-big-...

"I did not understand that Trump could find another authoritarian regime willing to accept America’s prisoners in exchange for payment. This innovation is the equivalent of authoritarianism making the jump across the blood/brain barrier."

"They put a 90 day timeline as opposed to an open-ended timeline, which is only gonna say there's gonna be more uncertainty. They've just lengthened the uncertainty." Trump's tariffs are a "wrecking ball" to the economy. Jon Corzine joins John Avlon:

"As the grim cavalcade of news about the Trump administration’s mass deportation program continues, it’s worth paying attention to the places where that program appears to be on its shakiest footing." ICYMI @adriancarrasquillo.bsky.social on successful pressure campaigns:

"Though I wasn’t being compelled to appear, I didn’t feel like I had a choice; it was an opportunity to directly challenge the folks who have used a conspiracy theory to decimate our nation’s response to foreign disinformation." ICYMI:

"Trump cannot assuage the bond market. He cannot convince it that he is 'normal' and should be given the benefit of the doubt. He cannot scare it into submission. He cannot bribe it. The bond market is not like the Supreme Court or Paul Weiss or Columbia."

"Charm does not emanate from him or his writing to win modern readers. When he died, whatever moment Sam Francis had once had was long past. Until Trump. Really, it’s the sense of prescience that has remade him." ICYMI @joshuatait.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/radical-ri...

"A microcosm of a nation, in a small but mighty way, making something right. People coming together to right a historical wrong says something about the enduring promise of this country." ICYMI @markhertling.bsky.social on Operation Benjamin: www.thebulwark.com/p/operation-...

For the House GOP, "it would be an unconscionable risk to allow a panicked or aggrieved bipartisan coalition to revoke the president’s unilateral authority to impose the tariffs." ICYMI @cheetah.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/do-congres...

"Donald Trump’s erratic and foolish actions have turned the most desirable financial haven in the world into a whirlpool of risk. The safest way to conduct business now is to avoid the United States to the greatest extent possible."
