If we ever want to get back to the middle, this has to be fixed. If it is not fixed, we will eventually implode and end as a democracy altogether. Corporations and Billionaires should not be running this country. They have been for the last 20 years or so and look where we are today.

Not sure I agree with the term "naive." SCOTUS too often seems drunk on their own power. They need to be reined in with court expansion to 13, one for each circuit, and a rotation that rids us of lifetime appointments.

Citizens United has to be seen in conjunction with the other SCOTUS decisions on corruption, such as deciding that a quid-pro-quo only mattered if the "quo" was an "official act". Pay for play was legalized. 1/

IIRC, Citizens United was decided that way because of the presumption that there would be no coordination with campaigns (and that this would prevent corruption). This was a legal fiction that fleets of semi-trailers & ocean liners pass through every day. 2/2

The members of the SCOTUS are intelligent. Not all are scrupulous or ethical, but they are intelligent. The idea that they decide cases in a vacuum and do not see the big picture and how they all connect for a desired outcome, is ridiculous. The SCOTUS knows full-well their desired goals.
