“The South shall rise again.” goes the rebellious refrain. Lincoln wanted reconciliation, but he did not live long enough to even start on that process. All the snake pit of hatred and prejudice that defined the Confederacy never was excised, it has lingered, festered and grown.

I live here. ln my life, I have seen little evidence of belief in democracy among the entrenched lifelong residents . There is ingrained despair with hopelessness that change can happen. Outsiders might think Roberts reasoning in Shelby County could be true, but look at has happened since then.

I have lived in the South for 40 years, not by choice. as a pure blood Yankee I was always treated with respect. I did see blatant racism/poverty in rural GA, coastal NC & Inland FL. VA is the polar opposite, multicultural, open minded & relative centrist leaning. Reb statues r gone in Richmond.

That is too broad a statement. There are many good southerners who are sick to their stomach by what is happening. Also, a lot of Black people migrated back to the south, which is good if they don't lose the vote.

Don't get me wrong. I think there is a deep well of racism in the leaderships of the confederate states. It is more of a class war with Black people at the bottom, then brown, then poor, then middle class where many are clamoring to be in that upper echelon. The Civil War has never been settled.

We went soft on the Confederacy after the war, trying to heal the rift instead of hanging the traitors at the leadership level and completely dismantling their power structure. For that, we got Jim Crow and then the sanitizing and gaslighting that birthed the "Lost Cause" lie.

The confederate flag should have been banned. Whenever confederate leaders’ monuments were suggested, that should have been immediately shot down. Same with naming military bases after confederate leaders bc the confederacy lost the war.

I live in AR and there’s so little union presence here. And not much collectivism outside of churches. There was so much latent racism when I was growing up in the 80’s and 90’s that I was too indoctrinated or naive to see.
