“Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us.”
The second amendment dudes want you to forget that there’s a first amendment. Don’t skip that one. It’s the basis of all of our rights in this country.
I mean, democracy needs all the allies it can find right now.
But calling somebody a bigot and then immediately admitting that you don’t have any proof of their bigotry except for vibes makes you seem like an unserious, biased clown.
And it creates divisions among those who stand for democracy.
I work in residential renovation. A few years ago some dude was running at the mouth with some standard misogynistic drivel and whining about the “language police”. I told him he could say whatever he wanted but nothing was stopping me from think he was a cretin. He was genuinely confused and hurt.
this framing is less bad than before but it is still misrepresenting the facts. the story has been spun to make khalil seem an unsympathetic character. you are perpetuating this nonsense. the title still says 2 bigots, which is libel.
If you guys could somehow convince my fellow liberals that backing anything even lightly touching Hamas is a recipe to keep Trump in power. Seriously I may go MAGA if I have to hear another idiot go on about how Oct 7 was somehow justified.
Our civil rights are under siege. They will never take away our free speech! They will never stop us from protesting. We will boycott Tesla until Musk has nothing. We will resist Trump until we are dead! They cannot stop us.
All peaceful protesters deserve their First Amendment rights. Anyone accused of violating a legitimate law passed by Congress (not a random, unconstitutional Executive Order) deserves due process and fair legal proceeding. Full stop.
Yeah, I imagine Mahmoud Khalil and I wouldn't agree on very much, but that's entirely beside the point right now, this is as much about us as it's about him. What kind of country do we want to be?
I like what he said in this comment, yes, but also his commentary really doesn't matter, we don't deport people for exercising their constitutionally protected rights in the United States.
It doesn't matter if I agree with Khalil or not, he shouldn't be deported for exercising the first amendment.
I see every constitutional scholar on social media talking about how we shouldn't deport people with unpopular views. Misses the mark. We're beyond that.
Deporting pro palestinian activists is deporting people for expressing mainstream, moderate views. That's how far this has already gone.
We shouldn't deport anyone for expressing their views, popular or otherwise. The content of the speech is only a pretense, Trump just wants to make good TV, if it wasn't campus protests he'd have found something else.
We don't have to agree with Khalil to disagree with how he's being treated.

First it was “Trump has no coherent ideology”.
Then it was “where’s the territorial expansion?”
Then, where’s the suppression of free speech?”
Every. Box. Ticked.
