History is written by the victors - in this case, the people who didn't die. Don't let the folks who shrug at a million dead Americans tell you what happened over the last five years. ICYMI @cathyyoung63.bsky.social:

So let me get this right: America spends hundreds of millions of dollars deporting folks out of the country. So they can go get the American job programming your software that CEOs shipped out long ago.
My life changed in many ways due to Covid. My husband died alone in a nursing home due to the lockdown. I am immunocompromised and have basically become a Covid Hermit for five years. Only dementia will keep me from remembering what happened in my life and my country.
Why in the world do we put up with this. To every Republican who endorsed him, every business who backed him, every tv network and newspaper who lied for him, you will get what’s coming to you.
"It should be noted that the lab leak theory is by no means proven correct, and many leading experts in the field, such as University of Sydney virologist Edward Holmes, a top authority on viral evolution, still regard it as unfounded."
No, the evidence shows that the origin is most probably natural
It wasn't, but some people will never be convinced the earth is round, that we went to the moon or many other conspiracies that aren't true.
We live in a world with more access to information than at any point in human history, yet some people are blind to facts die to pride or willful ignorance.
So sad to see PBS Newshour profile Lee and Macedo's book. We are truly screwed as a nation when the next public health crisis strikes. Ending our disease surveillance and mitigation projects overseas only ensures this will be sooner not later.
I was so annoyed by Progressive friends who judged me for not dismissing the lab leak theory out of hand. They didn’t see the irony of simply believing the official story, even though the people telling that story had a vested interest in it not being a lab leak.
Ever notice all the nut jobs who shit on all measures put in place to slow the spread of COVID never list the measures THEY would have put in place to slow the spread.
They also never lay the death of millions of Americans on the lap of then president Trump.
Apparently the economy was more important than saving lives.
All this dissent proves 2 things. Americans didn’t learn from the last 2 pandemics and God forbid we have another, your fellow American may be willing to do absolutely nothing to save you, or even them 🙄
As a lay person who was very aware of what was happening in the earliest days of the pandemic I find the current wave of gaslighting extremely disturbing. Thank you for the column.
Give this and the current administration’s ignorant and brutal attack on science and sweeping cuts to research and USAID funding, we should all be very afraid of the next pandemic!
Understand and use the Excess Deaths figures. There's no rebuttal for it except to claim that the vaccines killed them. Everything else is a performative argument toward the list of those who can't be trusted. They're going there anyway.
I notice many survivors are blithely saying lockdowns were not needed - forgetting many of them are still here and able to air that view precisely thanks to measures taken to stop the rampant spread of Covid.
Jennifer Sey is one of my least favorite voices out there. She purportedly was a liberal Marketing Exec for Nike but has turned rabidly MAGA. Her tirade about Covid just proves that MAGA is a nihilist movement. Not once does she mention the ACTUAL people who were most harmed by Covid. Doesn't GAF.
Unfortunately a main strategy MAGA women - is the mean girl strategy - Anne Coulter was the pioneer, Candace Owens, MTG, Lauren Boebert, Sarah Huckabee, Karoline Leavett, & Kristi Noem - queen of mean girls - a puppy killer. If this is how their best women are - no wonder GOP men hate women.

If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat.
At least try and fake intelligence, geez.
Shit like this makes me question our intelligence
I said then & still, Trump, family & friends, need to be charged with crimes against humanity.
Push back, people.
It’s depopulation time.

Trump got rid of our virologists in his 1st term hence COVID 19 came to our shores.
Biden rehired our virologists, and Trump has fired them again.

The buck stops THERE. It used to🙄
You know the idea that killing millions more is somehow a better idea than mitigation efforts because a tiny minority might get complications.
Oh, and freedom. 🙄

The real pandemic is stupidity
Plus, there are a lot of Ayn Rand followers who think sociopaths are better suited to run the country/world as empathy and kindness is weakness
Those people would never sacrifice anything
Corporations and libertarians just used it as an excuse to grab more power than they already have.
All the time with those bozos.
People didn’t “forget” it, they ERASED it. Tens of millions have willed it out of their consciousness through active, continuous self-deception.
It’s SO, SO, SO crazy.
It's already starting with Measles...

I knew there was a reason- but my brain is exhausted.
Yes. The ones that did not die but looked at death in the eye... We are the historians.
