I have always thought that being worried people asking for help might be scammers is a legacy of the idea that people who ask for help are morally bad.

I’ve had to spend too much time around ppl like this. Basically it’s as in “this person obviously can’t afford to live here if they need to crowdfund, evict them now or we’ll all be back in court sooner or later” (bc deep down they, too know our systems keep ppl in poverty).

Landlords say it violates the spirit of the lease because it's not a consistent form of income like a job. Prosecutors say it shows a lack of responsibility and rehabilitation (like a job would) and therefore a probation violation.

That landlord argument suggests to me that they wouldn't accept disability benefits or alimony as legit income either, which I'd argue violates fair housing law (for as much as FH laws are enforced)

I think they are separate categories, but landlords and their attorneys work overtime to discredit any income that isn't directly from a job. It was more extrapolation than comparison

They do not want people to help each other. It’s the same reason people dealing with Helene fallout can be denied FEMA payouts for having a crowdfunding campaign. See also using case law tying mutual aid & bail funds to “anarchism” in the RICO indictments leveled at Cop City activists.
