I have no idea why anyone would sign up for a protest. What is the rationale behind an organization even asking for a sign up? Is it just email harvesting?

I don’t usually - but I did for the recent Women’s March. They message you with last minute details and it helps gauge the expected turnout. I think people are more inclined to come if they see it’s going to be a good turnout. But again - I don’t usually sign up for the reasons mentioned here.

I have tried to tell them not to collect names, I've seen at least several other organizers with years of experience tell them to stop. I sent them several resources on infosec...but they are dedicated to their course.

Information communicated *directly to a lawyer by a client or potential client* is privileged, whereas information collected by a third party isn't. So a lawyer doesn't turn anything over to the cops without a court order, and often that's going to be appealed on principle.

That's different: they have to record the number of people committed to join a union to show that they've met the minimum number of people to be a legally recognized, and legally protected union.

Gathering names for a protest is painting a target on everyone and begging fascists to persecute them.
