Short term, the town halls, the protests, and wrangling a real opposition out of the existing Congress (especially the Senate) are needed. There is more: the dismantling of government sets America back long term, as the administration is incompetent, and I fear the Republicans overall are. 2/

We cannot lose more in education. We saw the effect of COVID losses. We are going to need a teaching corps outside the normal system, emphasizing literacy, critical thinking, civic responsibility, and basics in math, environment, and life skills. It can't be based in a flourishing economy. 3/

We must do our best to protect our health. We have access to knowledge to date on preventive medicine; we must share that. We must build individual capacities in any possible way, from first aid and CPR to hygiene and managing contagious disease. We're going to need guides in this. 4/

We must promote community resource sharing. If the economy worsens, we may need a cooperative model to address hunger, small part-time labor, possibly shelter, and other basics. This calls for a "shift backward" in habits; unlike the pandemic, isolation and "always online" won't strengthen us. 5/

At a candidate level, we need clear, communicative leaders who have access to people with these skill sets at a higher level and can strategize rebuilding government: not a giant sprawling bureaucracy but cementing these essentials and clearing corruption and outside interests from the system. 6/

Grassroots efforts are essential to reinforcing these leaders and building the same at local levels. Only with a reliable future pool of talent, a basically healthy population, a commitment to honest democratic government, and evidence of community relationships will we earn back global trust. 7/
