If grossly over paid/valued positions of power of any stripe (CEO class) actually did what they say they do--make things run well/better--they'd box themselves out of work. That's why they break but not fix; blame, not solve; misdirect, not identify; stoke, not soothe. Untenability serves them.

It probably is a solved business. But there is another solved "business": private equity rollup of solved businesses explicitly to extract value (as opposed to provide value).

I have no idea what's really happening of course, but private equity rollup is big in the funeral industry.

Well yeah, a competent, experienced employee can demand a competitive salary & benefits. A newbie is not only cheaper, but serves as a scapegoat if things go wrong. Management’s big failure was letting you get too good at what you do…
