It used to seem common when I was a kid that the opening credits to movies would give relevant context like "based on real events" or "based on the novel by..." They'd definitely go out of their way to remind people that Margaret Mitchell wrote "Gone With The Wind."

I get the feeling that many people who love the movie who then go on to read the book have the same experience I had seeing the movie as someone who loves the book, which is that the two stories are only technically related and the version that didn’t come first for them is Bad and Wrong.

I completely agree! Recently the movie "Here" was released, with Tom Hanks, and few people know that it is based on the graphic novel of the same name, written and illustrated by Richard McGuire.
