The background seems that she campaigned to get special advisors to take reduced salaries, then gave herself a pay rise. The reason this is news is that she is very ambitious and confident of her own talent, and is apparently empire building.

Incidentally according the Town Hall Rich List 188 council employees have a higher salary than the PM, with 557 receiving total remuneration in excess of the PM's. No problem there for the BBC.

(Technically the AB of C earns half what the PM earns, but he gets an additional stipend worth £80k per annum which brings him to just above parity with the PM.)

Incidentally the Northern Irish FM earns rather less than the PM but I suppose the gun and drug running makes up the disparity nicely.
