That was my thinking too. I don't know the ages, but most of these guys have been around for a while and, although still good, have more play behind them than in front. Not bad to trade while they still have some cache.
Most of the releases look appropriate. However the narrative is concerning. The salary cap is always rising which means players contracts will rise too. If the York family canβt stomach paying out those contracts then it may be time for them to sell the 49ers so they can focus on Leeds & Rangers.
It literally has nothing to do with the cash on hand at all. They had always planned on these exact losses. Only reason Greenlaw came back last season was because he was cheap, he played 1 half and then went back on IR. Like they drafted replacements for all these guys already.
Most look like reasonable moves by the 49ers. Losing Greenlaw and Hufanga stings, but there are a lot of players on that list who are declining, often injured or backups.
Good players, but this group needed a blood-letting. Puts pressure on the draft, but that's where winners are built.

They got a lot of work to do to get back there with a retool.
