Why build an inner city railroad, when it would be much easier, quicker & cheaper to just buy a fleet of fully electric buses & put then on a dedicated bus lane instead?
Just have a look at Edinburgh for how things can go wrong.

No not a good thing. The cost spirals out of control and for them do to what? The same thing buses can do far better and cheaply. Trust me, it's a bad idea.

As a tram user who would never take the bus into Manchester I'd say I disagree. However I think it depends on where the tram lines are located. If they mostly use existing roads then maybe they're not so good

Agreed...If they seldom come into contact with roads, and don't have lots of bends, then they can work very well. Where i live that was the promise, but it never came to be...They break down often and when they break down on a road, it's a nightmare.

Our tramlines into town are pretty decent routes. That said, you can see the shortfalls of trams on our network.

Through Salford Quays, I could walk faster.

Through town is interminable.

Using old railway lines like around Oldham makes trips from town to say Rochdale, too long vs bus/train

Actually what's the point of Salford Quays (the stop) it's almost derelict around there. Maybe reopen it if they ever develop the land around there
