Short stories are mostly unknown, even when they're written by legends. This one is super beloved within the literate SFF nerd hive, but I don't think has penetrated much outside it. Short stories just aren't that popular.
Which kills me, because they're one of my favorite art forms.
I have read so many great short stories. But that particular one by Ursula was taught after I left school. I have an idea about it but haven't read it.
I was surprised seeing a number of similar short stories over the years before I finally read Omelas and realised a few of people had walked away and taken the premise with them.
Those who write about those who write about those who write about those who write about those who write about those who write about those who write about those who write about those who write about those who write about those who write about those who write about those who walk away from Omelas.

You can't have that take on Omelas without breaking some eggs.
