If you panhandle outside an NIH lab next to the dumpster you may be able to intercept a slightly used one. There are more hurdles in running a lab under the overpass tho.

And depending on your position at a uni, you may have been legally prohibited from engaging in any outside work, so it's not like you can try to pick up more hours at your part-time job at the hardware store.

There's also the concept that it's just not taken seriously in the field if it's not from a collaborative office. I'm not currently in science, but I self-fund my history research. It's not considered "real research" by a lot of others working for organizations. Science is probably worse for that.

Not sure if it's really the same because science has almost always been highly collaborative. The "lone outsider genius" stuff is mainly bullshit and mythmaking.

All fields are highly collaborative. None of us can do what we do without input from others, even if we're relegated to our own libraries due to circumstances. I can't do what I do without the ability to research what others have also done. Peer-review is a standard for a reason.

I don't really know enough about the process of how historians work or historian culture to comment on it. Despite following some of the academic and online battles over narrative control. (My specialty is art and culture but I grew up around medical research and being taught scientific methodology)

I’m still hoping (wishful thinking I know) that some or many of these folks are rehired soon as this is illegal. For example: my NSF program officer was fired under ‘probationary’ role BS. But he has been there for >5 years. I came to know they changed his status to probationary just before firing.
