What I find funniest about this point in particular is that the only people who were shocked by Trump winning were the very centrists who do spend time trying to discuss things ‘rationally’ with the right.

In some ways no, why shouldn't people chat to like minded people? But where it becomes a problem is A) that becomes self reinforcing and is harder to appreciate views of others B) is taken as representative and only at every election are people shaken out of it by a shock populist success.
