It’s horrifying me to hear so many people trying to justify hitting children and just anyone in general. It’s not “teaching a lesson”, it’s literal abuse, both physically and mentally. I get nervous hearing a belt buckle or seeing parents yelling. There’s a healthy way to teach, this is never it.

I don’t believe correlation = causation in this case.

There have been a lot of societal changes and other factors causing it in that time.

I’m 24 and see it as well but the world is different so there’s a lot of actions at play here

I don't entirely either. But smacking has been replaced with the opposite end of the spectrum. Disengaged parenting, or potentially worse, let the little darlings have everything they want, no boundaries, no rules. We need something in between the two, consistently applied.

1st position I do not agree with physical violence towards kids, let me be clear. But. My wife teaches primary/elementary kids. She qualified in 2004. Then she had a safe school. Now, between knife attacks, thrown furniture, doors slammed on heads and limbs, blunt force trauma to the torso 1/2

Anyone I meet who says that "my parents did that and I turned out fine" will usually have demonstrated that they are not mentally healthy and emotionally developed individuals beforehand. I've met a lot of middle-aged men with some clear surface-level issues who would parrot that line.
