They've been working to get these nominees through congressional hearings and to the point where they can put them "on the floor" to a vote. In other words, they've been "racing to do this" for four years.

A new president always gets to appoint his own Attorney General. Pete would get replaced in a month.
FBI Directors are appointed for 10 year terms and can’t be dismissed except for cause. Forcing Wray out would just be precedent for Trump forcing out his replacement.
