Ms. Stewart is the LWVUS CEO. The League is a great organization to join for those who are looking for a place to become active during these scary times for Democracy.
Enough to either quit getting married, or quit changing your name when you do. Some women already shy away from marriage, so there’s that. GOP could push that to end. They ruin everything else.
Yes, that's one reason why the administration wants the SAVE act. The other is to keep women down where the "white rich guys" think we belong .
Sway the vote and keep women under the heel.
So anti-christian and hypocritical
Is there good legal advice for what married women with their husband's last name can do now to prepare for the next election, in case this passes? I don't want to wait until the last minute.
Get a passport. It's easier than going to court to get a name change and then change all of your credit cards, banking information, mortgage, health insurance, Social Security, etc., back to your maiden name.
Yes I think I will do that. Unfortunately my name change was even more complicated due to marriage, divorce, and remarriage. Even my first and middle names got messed up through all of that. I'm concerned not even a passport will be enough. I do have a "Real ID" in AZ so I'm hoping that will help.
I'm in Texas and have a Real ID driver's license. My understanding is you can take your birth certificate, marriage license, and divorce decree (if applicable) to prove who you are and they WILL NOT be accepted to vote here in Texas.
Even if you're already registered to vote too? That was the one caveat I'd heard that if you're registered and you've been voting, you'd be ok. However, it seems we can be purged from the voter roles in some states on a whim.
I wonder if one reason that Rs don't mind disenfranchising some Republican married women, could be b/c of the chance that these women's compassion becomes activated by all the horrible actions of the current regime and that they would then vote against Republicans?
Once again, in the service of "election integrity"---a solution without a corresponding problem. 100 and a few years later, here they are attempting to upend women's exercise of their franchise. What is old is made new again.
You put the situation so sweetly. After the 19th Amendment, they'll go after the 13th. All the 'wrong' kinds of people - after all. "They weren't using those rights the way they should have."
It is a dirty underhanded act yet I am not surprised. The republicans are desperate to hold power and will do desperate means to do so. This one is most despicable and will forever sway women to wisely avoid taking their husband' surname which has in my opinion been a symbol of male dominance.
The SAVE act is trying to save the GOP from the public’s dislike of their policies. Crooked voting rules changes. Confusion. Voter frustration. Whatever it takes.
Republicans can’t win elections with their policies because their policies are terrible so they have to cheat. Nobody should be surprised by this behavior.

They won't change anything.
Yeah that’s the point for these America hating Republicans.

Republicans LOVE traditional values.
I can’t see this backfiring on them at all.
“Dang it! I owned myself to own the libs!”
