The ruling is by Cecilia Altonaga--chief judge SDFL (who never took any steps when Cannon kept being picked "randomly" for Trump cases).
She's part of a prominent GOP Cuban-American family--nominated initially by W. Bush and was talked about as possible SCOTUS pick.

The opinion was striking, among other things, because it was - at bottom - an attack on Judge Kapan. Federal judges rarely do that to one another, even when it is merited. And it was not merited in this case.

Defamation against a public figures is extremely hard to prove. George Stephanopoulos is not a lawyers. There was a judge who said what Trump did was rape. Defamation required intent and harm. Intent is hard to prove and there was no harm. ABC caved without a fight.
