The subway is the same subway it's always been. The 70's-80's had their grim moments (Bernie Goetz, etc.) but, in general, the subway's safe. There are occasional crimes committed there as there are elsewhere in the city, or any other city, for that matter. NY is pretty safe, and so are the subways.

Subway crime is not only down 36% since implementation of congestion pricing, ridership increased significantly at the same time so the crime drop is actually even bigger than it looks

I know many ppl who usually drive in are parking way uptown and taking the subway down to avoid the fee. Metro North is more crowded due to increased ridership to avoid the fee. The subways seem more crowded and there is no evidence crime has spiked because of it.

It's gotten safer but there are a good number of homeless people who live in subway cars. I guess if you're like Bondi, their mere presence (or the ethnicity of a lot of them) comes across as dangerous. She must live in a gated community so the sight of people who don't look like her is a shock.
