The American economy is based on an assumption of a high level of consumer spending. It's not at all clear what would happen if people suddenly stopped buying things. I don't think the outcome would be good.

I’m not convinced by that argument. I think half the country is some combination of racist or misogynistic. Some wanted people with darker skin tone harmed or removed. Some didn’t want to be led by someone without a penis. The economy was a fig leaf. See current polls.
