Not mad… very happy to hear your point of view. People are so entrenched in their own position that they can’t see straight (me included). We have to admit our faults to be better people, do better things, and help make a better future. Most importantly, we need to make sure government works.

Well done on the show Dan. I agree with most points about limiting the executive branch, with the exception of one point. Having congress get involved to declare war when legitimate threats can arrive at a moments notice seems antiquated. I want my president to be able to act swiftly if needed.

Fine. But then you need to recreate a mechanism where he/she doesn't get extreme C in C wartime authority without another branch of govt (besides his own) telling him that he/she can.
The problem (obviously)is having both powers in one person's hands.

What's missing from this is that straws can be removed. As you said, the Great Depression and WW2 were big straws. That's why the Legislative created the amendment keeping presidents to 2 terms.

There are levers to prevent or stop an autocrat. We're mostly mad no ones used it (yet, hopefully).

Straws can only theoretically be removed at this point. Trump will surely attempt to declare some emergency under which elections cannot be held. SCOTUS has all but explicitly endorsed that level of authority. Trump’s actions tell me he doesn’t care at all about public perception or approval.

He doesn’t care about public approval because he’s not planning on having elections in 2026 or beyond. Of course the media and Congress aren’t daring to demand an answer on that, because that would mean they’d be doing their jobs.

I’ve also always wanted to hear you do a bit of a discussion / explainer about putting freedom v equality as your no. 1. My old sociology professor always said, freedom also means the freedom to starve. Equality seems to imply freedom as well as prosperity.

In fact,you CAN'T have freedom without laws to protect everyone.Add to that the fact that "freedom" doesn't conflict with a society having minimum standards for what they'll allow a fellow human to suffer. I don’t disagree but I think focusing on it from a freedom perspective is an American thing? I’m an Aussie. Often one person’s freedom is another’s restriction. Maybe semantics, but to me the principles of equality better advance the sorts of things you mention like protecting your own family etc.

In the end, US President is just a job. Humans are limited beings, but all our constitutions presume superhuman mental capabilities among politicians (and voters!). The other problem: All politics are package deals. (Analogy: You need different brakes in your car? You have to buy a different car.)

Think back to the GOP primary in 2016. If you look at his share of the vote, he's got a true, hardcore base of support nationwide of like 15% or so. He couldn't scrape together a full majority of Republicans, he won by the winner takes all delegate distribution.
