armed officers didn’t exactly de-escalate their ptsd panic attack.

I know in some cases backup may be required - but starting with health experts will reduce risk of harm.

Having a 10 year history in
working Mobile Crisis Services, it makes a very big difference. I’ve worked with and without law enforcement, and it really helps. It helps the person involved and it helps law enforcement too, allowing trained specialists to deescalate the situation, without force.

In Norway they kind of do a decent job of it as first responders though. An emphasis on talking and de-escalation helps, also being held to a higher standard for adherence to the law.

As the clinical director of a mobile crisis team covering 2 counties, I can say without a doubt that this is the way to go. ED admits? Down. PD engagement? Down. Now, I'm just waiting for the "administration" to throw a wrench into it.
