I'm only 30 pages into THE FILMS OF ROBERTA FINDLAY, the first collection of essays about a great director/cinematographer who lived in obscurity for years because she mostly made hard-core, and it is already an essential read.

I just hope they don't try to paint her as some sort of feminist icon, because what she did with that Shauna Grant posthumous exploitation picture was loathsome. I did like some of her films, though, so I'll give it a read.
Not at all. It is very clear eyed about Roberta's anti-feminist views and discusses the Shauna Grant thing in the first chapter and that Roberta said "She did it to make a buck>"
So the book FINALLY arrived and I ran to your essay first. It's really great work. Nuanced, intellectually rigorous and fair. What it also did is convince me to do something I never thought I'd do... watch the film again. Terrific essay!
She rejected the title of feminist and said she " never had a problem at all" with the guys she worked with (and in the same interview describes getting a black eye and ripped off for 12 grand by a male distributor). I agree about Shauna Grant.
