Which is why I feel we should be less aggressive in our intercity rail investments & more aggressive in our local transit investments.
This will increase demand for intercity rail: The marginal person living w/in frequent transit is more likely to use intercity rail than 1 who isn't.
I think there's a strong case for connecting the midwest to the northeast and then knitting the MW cities together with better rail (Pitt/Indy/Detroit/Chicago/Milwaukee/MSP most important), the Texas Triangle and PNW make sense, rest is kind of meh.
There's definitely enough Nerd Bird traffic to justify connecting the PNW to the Bay Area.
