That would be the ideal scenario. We'd still be reliant on a US company though. Lockheed Martin builds the missiles, the launchers, presumably the submarines fire control system and also, presumably, carries out maintenance/servicing. And US Republicans could well block that being set up.

Western leaders wanted to be cautious to avoid nuclear risks. They are still extremely jumpy about WW3. Now instead they have initiated nuclear proliferation thus making the use of nuclear weapons far more likely in long run. Cowardice is a very bad risk management principle.

It's rather different. The nuclear attacks left a huge scar on the Japanese psyche. Not just from the direct attack, which was horrific enough, but the aftermath. Children were born with horrible deformities in the surrounding areas for years after. Cancers were rife.

I dont think you understand the depth of feeling on the matter in Japan post WWII. They're incredibly cautious. Theyve only very recently allowed the idea of selling Japanese arms at all and their 'military' is still officially a Self Defence Force. They're constitutionally pacifist.

He seems to be totally dismissive of the British deterrent as too bound to the US, and to want to know if the French are willing to share control of their nuclear weapons. I think it’s hard to overstate the extent to which Poland will do whatever it takes to protect itself from Russia.

In fairness the UK deterrant is reliant on US participation, not at the firing stage, obviously, but the US made missiles are stored and maintained/serviced in Georgia, the launchers are US made as well and the subs use a lot of US hardware and software, presumably maintained by US companies.
