Tangential but when I lived in Edinburgh we had a loose manhole cover on our street that made a godawful racket any time someone drove over it. Multiple requests to get it fixed, nothing. Finally borrowed a traffic cone from elsewhere, sat it on the lid, called it in again.

Not only did no one drive over it in the meantime because everyone Obeys the Cone, but within a couple days the streets dept had put up a proper multi-cone barrier around it, and within about a week it had been fixed. I truly think the cone did it. People see a cone and assume it's there officially.

This is why we have curb cuts in most major cities. A group of disabled folks in Berkeley got tired of waiting and went out in the middle of the night, wheelchairs and all, and made the curb ramps themselves.

I don’t feel it is sad, but inspiring, a heroic story, reminding that we don’t need to wait for progress. We can make progress, in our own communities, and that progress spreads. The individuals did the curb cuts only in Berkeley, CA, now it’s norm everywhere. We have power, we just need to use it.
