I don't want a boss who's wild, weird, and gritty, I want a boss who pays me on time and in full, who speaks to me like an adult, and who sends me the fuck home when bedbugs are spotted in the workplace

(relating this to enterprise generally) i've worked at both Uber (in 2017) and Playstation and I find it endlessly fascinating that at Uber, the mythical of the 10x developer was seen as the end goal for all hiring (and career development) and that chaos and erratic behavior were worthwhile...
while at PlayStation, the emphasis was on eternally consistent work, so "everyone works at 50-70% capacity all the time" was the norm instead of "everyone works 160% some of the time and is a lunatic the other parts of the time"
Yeah there's a difference between being a zealous advocate who really gives a shit and being completely unpredictable and chaotic; one of those makes it a LOT harder to function!
I don't think professionalism in the sense being used here is necessary for that. I wouldn't call many of the EDs in my area professional, but they would all act ethically in the scenarios you mention.
yeah I really struggle to focus on my work because I know firsthand that the toxicity of the place means that we, as an institution, do a bad job at our mission!
Nonprofit is a very broad term. There's Nonprofit as in a typical company that makes money but isn't allowed to give it out to shareholders, only employees or charity (many Hospitals are this) - but then there's a Nonprofit as in a Grant-funded NGO doing govt work but more expensive to graft the gov
In many places you don't have a govt Department of Homeless Affairs, you have 3-4 'Homeless Helper Funds' which are Nonprofits and hire a bunch of people on big salaries who don't really do much and are much less accountable than your average government functionary
