You know, I’m not really too bothered with genre names generally. But I’ve never been crazy about “Metroidvania”.

There are two reasons I think.

1. It’s got a bad mouth feel when saying it

2. Not a fan of the portmanteau of brands. It’s kind of inscrutable if you don’t know what either is

The second reason there also makes me think of “Soulslike” too, cause it’s hard to parse if you don’t know what Dark Souls is.

I don’t like it for that reason and also that Castlevania SOTN brought nothing new to the formula, you can just call them Metroids IMO 😅 (which we’d also feel silly doing)

Nobody likes "Metroidvania."

It was originally conned *specifically* to describe Castlevania games that played closer to SotN than NES Castlevania.

Then somehow became a catch-all for the genre.

They should just be called Metroidlikes.
