Yes, the cavalier disregard for assets collectively built up through intergenerational labor and in this case joint sacrifice reminds me of the Obama-era controversy over "You didn't build that." But at least they didn't go out and tear up the roads out of pique.

It's important to recognize that the attack on DEI, that is the effort to resegregate the US, is also an assault on a public good that was the product of collective effort and sacrifice, and that belongs to and benefits all of us.

A few years ago I listened to an interview with the author of the book The Sum of Us where she gave a great illustration of this: the disappearance of public swimming pools all over the U.S. after courts ordered them to be desegregated. I mean, WTF?

Thousands of swimming pools that anybody could enjoy filled in because white folks didn’t want to share them with black folks. I cannot wrap my head around that level of hatred, and it is mind-blowing that it still exists with enough force here that such bigots are now in charge.
