He WAS in a Majority position but felt is should not be "just him" so he formed an ALL-Party ERRE Committee to do it!
He explained all this some months ago in interview with Nate!!
We'd all been better off if he had been authoritarian & decided himself - who knew Harper had damaged Cdns so much?
Threat of PPC was much different in ‘15 than now. Sure, an STV system is needed, but there was danger lurking for the left a decade ago that has now been consolidated in CPC.
Right. He was coincidentally "unable" to fulfill that campaign promise and reform the system when that system was working well for him, but now that it's not, he's full of regret.
I would love to see Ranked Ballots as an alternative to First past the Post. It will never happen with a CPC gov't. because they would never have a progressive alternative.
This broken promise cost him a huge chunk of the young voters who gave him his majority & revealed him to be cynical (which is what he ran vs, remember “sunny ways”?). He never won these voters back & as a result didn’t get another majority 🗳️
The completely unnecessary 2021 election really pissed us off. JT rolled the dice & came up with nothing, pulling this dumb stunt during the worst of the pandemic.
Nope, I think he was just out to get the almighty majority government again. He failed miserably & pissed off a lot of people with an expensive & useless election.
Vaccine mandates didn't last long & the feds have also given up on the pandemic.
I’ve never been in love with the guy, but I’m sure glad he was PM for ten years vs Harper, Scheer, O’Toole.
Personally, I like minority governments and am satisfied with what the NDP and Liberals have accomplished, certainly against the Conservative alternative we have experienced in the provinces.
I think there is a lot of truth in your words. JT started with a lot of promise. The reform of an antiquated political system would have been an important step for Canada.
Because it's their fault; none of them could agree on what they wanted, it died in the HOC as a result. He's not a king, he can't force it, it needs the support of parliament.
He ran on adding proportional representation which did have some public support. He settled on ranked ballots only, which many people believe does not lessen polarization but entrenches it (Australia being the example).
Or, and stick with me here, he never wanted reform in the first place (especially once he won a majority without it) and blew the whole thing up himself in a way that gave him (thin) cover
He did run on reform, but he made it clear he would only get it through if he could get the support of two other parties, this was crucial for him as a big part of his platform was opposition and reversing Harper's undemocratic reformd
That is a historical, he did say he'd be willing to have fair vote Canada testify before committee, and they stretched that into something he didn't say
He said he couldn't do it "unilaterally", which means he caved to lobbying from unnamed advisors and confidantes. Basically, he didn't try hard enough, and I'll never forgive him for that.
He had the same pie-eyed optimistic centrist progressivsm as Obama, that he could work with all partied and pull people together. He genuinely believed - even though the Liberals had a majority government - that he should have a consensus to do it. He even said that today. /1
But he didn't need consensus. And he shouldn't have bothered. They should've pushed through Ranked Choice.
I know some prefer Proportional Representation. But even so, Ranked Choice is infinitely better than a FPTP system where PP will destroy our institutions with 40% support. /2

Trudeau sought a mandate for spending and federal vaccine mandates, Canadian chose to stay the course.
Liberals would have very likely lost if held later in ‘22 or ‘23, delivering more PP.

(Narrator: “he didn’t”)
