For me? Tie between Final Fantasy 9 and Persona 5. The boss themes in FF9 are still some of my favorites while I spent a lot of time in Persona dragging out battles just to listen to the music.

And I hate to say it but yeah for the combination of quality, quantity, story, and expression, it's the big three Mihoyo titles (Genshin, Star Rail, ZZZ). Whole albums and essays for their tuned, and whole *music videos* released monthly for bangers.

I'm on a similar boat. It is wildly inspired, creative, and had so much ALIVE about it from the animation, music, and VA.

But then it sometimes falls into trappings of more standard or boring JRPG design and when it runs poorly it hurts its timing system. Some real cooking here

Best or most effective? My favorite is P5Royal. Never get sick of it, and it makes the turn based combat feel more active by being hi energy. However, to this day I have a trauma response to the Guardian motif from BotW.

In Persona 5 Royale, the battle music for the pyramid boss: 'Rivers in the Desert' is my favorite battle music.

for me it’s either Legend of Dragoon or specifically the Promised Consort Radahn battle music from Elden Ring. it’s just…it’s both scary and ethereal.
