Because we tried this in football 100 years ago. If defense and offense both use the flying wedge (i.e. tush push), players start getting killed on the field because of the crushing force involved.
It really should be banned from a player safety perspective. And not just for the tush push. I think it’s unsafe to have offensive players pushing runners forward. There have been times I have seen defenders injured from an offensive lineman slamming into them to try to push a runner forward.
How do they define immediately? At the snap? With a second of the snap? Are we going to require refs to determine in real time if the offensive players paused for long enough before pushing?
This is a good rule, and literally was a rule forever. It was a huge part of the Ice Bowl QB sneak, and the Bush Push in 2005 which were both incredible. Bring it back.
