Moreland peat fire can burn for weeks with no sign of the fire on the surface and then suddenly burst out on to the surface. The fire crews, most of them retained around the Pennines, are tied up watching it.

If they were really concerned about fires, they'd be out on the moors as I was, on Sunday, alongside 35 other volunteers, planting sphagnum moss. Or blocking the drains that keep the moors dry when they should be wet. Horrible liars, all of them.

Funny how they completely fail to mention the terrible effect their preferred way of working has on atmosphere (they still burn it), wildlife (if it ain't a grouse they kill it - then they kill those too) and flooding (a true wet and overgrown moorland dramatically reduces runoff speed and volume)
