It’s the feeling that you matter. Bikes are first class vehicles in NL, with setting appropriate priority in signalling, right of way, space, lighting, and maintenance.

Apart from the not insignificant fact that you know you’ll get home alive, one of the best things about NL cycling is knowing you will get to your destination; there will be a cycling route and it’ll be easy to find.

Whereas in London, for any trip outside of my normal routes, I have to spend the evening before looking at StreetView to see if the obvious A-road route is a three-lane killer.

When I visited Amsterdam I did that even cycling with my 9yo daughter - just set off, with her in front as usual, and a rough idea which way I was heading. I wouldn't do that on an unfamiliar route in the UK, even in my home town!

Yes, the choreography! At junctions here in Groningen it’s often set up so that all cyclists get a green light at the same time. Choreography Central! It all goes perfectly smoothly until first-year students who are new in town have to attempt it.

I’m with you there. Just cycled in Munich and, although there are cycle lanes, it’s not that easy to get into the old centre: Basically, you’ve got a circle around the outside. Unlike, for example, Amsterdam where you can get right in anywhere - even the Jordaan & Grachtengordel.

* Cycling is the default.
* For my lifestyle it is often quicker to use a bike than public transport.
* There is no place I cannot reach with my bike.
* There is a playfulness/fun element around cycling, like these three guys using one ebike for pedal assist.
