Is AM formation common in non-vascular plants?
You mention lipid feeding on the fungal symbiont. Is that the plant signaling to the fungus? Or is that food for it like sugars?
No worries, curiosity is always welcome! π
AM is widespread among all major groups of land plants except mosses, so it is common for bryophytes too!
As for lipid feeding, lipids are a carbon source, like sugars, that the plant provides to the fungus as "food" π
Oh, one more question: I assume the fungi also are sensing the plants? Are those mechanisms also highly conserved?
