Imagine this sort of statement from a US politician. It's something Jimmy Carter might have done, and that's why he was a failure as a politician (though not as a statesman).
Contrition does not necessarily make a politician a failure. Yoon is a disgusting person who tried to hijack the entire government. But apparently his party still backs him.
He may not be a fully functioning adult. This makes no sense and there is no way to run the country like this. From US security perspective, I hope he is impeached. Unstable? Incompetent? Dysfunctional? Does not matter. Risky.
He must resign, and fast. He will ruin his party's chances at the next elections if he isn't pressed into taking the consequences of his actions. I can't imagine people supporting him for more than 1-2 weeks more without long-term damage on several fields. Thank God nobody died during this stunt!
At least for what it is, he did apologize. I sincerely doubt when the Orange head with a red hat on decides he is going to do this….. ( I’m almost sure he will) he with the red hat, will not apologize.
After Yoon's speech, the big question is what does it mean for Yoon to hand over governance powers to the party...
Unless I'm missing something, there does not appear to be a process whereby the president can just hand over the duties of the presidency to another member of his party.
I wouldn't say definitely. Still hanging on a knife edge and depends on some members of the PPP to put country over party. Conservatives around the world seem to all share that same problem.
As we try to make sense of Yoon's speech -- especially the part about him proposing to entrust his presidential powers to the party -- it is worth considering that he may have something in mind like what this Chosun Ilbo author wrote about earlier today:
Yea..the promise to just turn over power to the PPP is intriguing. It is nutso, but also intriguing. That might be tempting to the party as he tries to save himself.
"The third option is to prepare for an 'orderly exit' by shortening the president's term and having him step down to a secondary role, along with a constitutional amendment."
But who would support that? And especially right now?
According to this report, Rep. Cho Kyung-tae of the PPP has changed his mind, and will no longer support Yoon's impeachment this evening. If true, that means there’s only one PPP lawmaker on record as supporting impeachment.
Yeah it’s secret ballot, at least there’s that. We can imagine that 8 lawmakers will have an easier time voting in favour of his impeachment thanks to that

Classy dictator.
Surely one of us will die before that could ever happen.

But in reality, how many conservatives will even attend the hearing? What's the point of showing up to vote no?
I like how he says he ordered the military to withdraw and lift the martial law after the NA vote
as if it was a thoroughly pedestrian thing that the NA met at 2 in the fucking morning
as if he didn't order special forces to breach and clear the NA to prevent that very vote
