I am old so I can say this: innovation in neuroscience research can be accelerated if we did not waste so much resources repeating what we already know from NHP and rat research in Cre mouse lines

not necessarily the repeat part, but general perspective . There exists some belief that we waste much of our time investigating how brain circuits compute things and interact with each other in monkeys while this can be done this way in another in mice.

Seriously though, I love technology (and lasers!). I actually got my PhD with Ralph Adams who invented in vivo electrochemistry/voltammetry and HPLC-EC but I wish there was more emphasis on innovative scientific questions
We definitely need to emphasize innovative research questions. But can grant reviewers recognize and value those??
What if our grant reviewers are not the most enlightened people? For instance, I'm part of a panel... 😅
Many NIH institutes fund regular R01s only at 10ish percent so that is not much better than many foundations or special NIH mechanisms like Katz but yes, limited funding is not helping
