Back before guest characters in fighting games became so common.
Could Link (GameCube), Spawn (Xbox) and Heihachi (PlayStation 2) really have been the first guest characters in fighting games?
(I consider that different than crossovers like Capcom's Vs. series or SNK's King Of Fighters.)
