i think the smarter ones are just able to reason about how you should or could be feeling given a context and observable cues. they don’t actually “feel” any sort of reflection of emotion like empathy actually entails

Yeah, I first became aware of that through Doug Wilson. He’s a racist and slavery apologist. His student Joe Rigney wrote a book called “The Sin of Empathy” (released in February). He previously wrote similar articles. One was published on Desiring God (a popular reformed Christian website) in 2019.

Ah, I feel you there. I grew up in an SBC church. I’ve been keeping up with the alt-right/christian nationalism stuff just because I have the background to understand it and what it is leading to. Hasn’t done great things for my anxiety though.

Musk is fundamentally incapable of an empathetic worldview. His brain is wired differently than the average person and he was raised in an abusive and isolated environment. His obscene wealth shields him from any meaningful consequences or growth. I would pity him if he wasn’t an absolute monster.
