My wife just read Schumer’s piece in the NY TIMES explaining his decision. Senator, allow me to help. Imagine republicans based a bill ending social security. That can be overturned in court. But if a president decides social security is not essential during a govt shutdown, nothing can be done.
That’s a fair point. A shutdown would give the executive branch unchecked power over how to enforce (or not enforce) policies, which could be even more damaging. Still, it’s frustrating to see Democrats backtrack when leverage is so limited.
