Tonight, hours after the Paul Weiss news broke, an associate at Skadden Arps sent a firm-wide email:

"Please consider this email my two week notice, revocable if the firm comes up with a satisfactory response to the current moment...We do not have time. It is now or it is never..."

Since she got locked out of her e-mail, I guess they pretty quickly went with "Your resignation is accepted." As she was no doubt expecting. So yes, a genuinely principled stand.

She was correct to take a stand and evidently smarter than the managing partners, who would rather chase dollars today than preserve liberty and constitutional rights for their children.

A partner taking this kind of stand might make a difference, if they have their own personally loyal clients that they can take from the firm on departure. But they probably wouldn't do it by firm-wide blast email.

An associate with that kind of leverage is a very rare case; they're mostly staff.
