you really want to pick now of all times to make the anarchist case for an American union state because it's gonna cause one of the states to wither away?
he's clearly not talking about annexation. he's hoping for the equivalence of ukraine joining the european union, a loopy idea in our context but not one which deserves scorn and would not get scorn until trump poisoned the well.
I barely want like half the states that are currently in the union to be in it. Why everyone wants to expand it to the countries that have emphatically said no is a mystery to me other than “map big"
Describing this as Navalnyism is just... *chef's kiss*
Thank you, very apt and appreciated as a Canadian. I swore an oath to this country twice (once for citizenship, once for service) and in no sense and under no circumstances did I sign up for American occupation, which I would resist violently.
Canadians would resoundingly, immediately "resist violently," regular Canadians across a vast political spectrum, and Americans seem unable to fathom this
We need Americans to understand that structurally, we are fundamentally incompatible and there is no "civil" union possible between the US and Canada. Different systems, different values, different place in the world. Looking at random maps or sensing vibes is not a valid basis for annexation.
"We speak the same language and have similar cultures, and obviously we're the bigger brother here, so just roll over and become Americans like we know all Canadians secretly want to do anyway! Do you need us to occupy a city or two to get the point across?"
A- why did he have to stay on Twitter damnit
B- I will cop to formerly believing we should have a North American federation with Canada and Mexico. Unfortunately that is now about as dead as it's possible to be.
I personally would support a Schengen-style agreement between the US and Canada. I also recognize that such a thing is totally DOA now for very understandable reasons, at least until a future US president apologizes, and do not want to push the issue.
Lol a future President apologizing isn’t going to make Canadians trust the USA enough to want any kind of integration for a generation. The trust is broken. Gone.
I once saw a Russian liberal lamenting about how russia and Ukraine used to have a US-Canada like relationship before 2014. That's about to have two meanings at this point.
People forget that their were also Euro federalists prior to the World Wars. The smart ones didn’t say “maybe these fascists trying to conquer our continent have some good points.”
Germany, and its imperial ambitions, had to be defeated completely and absolutely before they could integrate with Europe. If we want North America to achieve the same integration as Europe, it can only be as equals. America must give up her empire before it can join her sister countries as equals.
It's really interesting to ask him about the sexual harassment allegations. I don't have much info other than him getting the boot from a local Dems group, but the defense he gave me is worse than the accusations
His story is that one crazy woman was out to ruin his life and then recruited several other women to claim that he did things to them too in some sort of large-scale coordinated plot
If Canada wants to join us I will welcome them with open arms. Until that day they are a separate country, it was always a bit ridiculous to talk about merging and it is especially ridiculous now.
And they never will so there's no need to entertain that nonsense, even as a hypothetical, because normalizing the concept in our current political situation only benefits fascists!
This guy is repulsive now. He’s your classic case of an account blowing up, getting way ahead of his skies, and flaming out. His earlier takes were not this ridiculous, but as his account and ego grew, he became cringe.
I fully vehemently support an independent Canada, but if a time traveler from a less dogshit timeline 100 years in the future told me North America had amicably formed a political union a la EU that wouldn't have shocked me.
I see people across the political spectrum, both left/right and radical/reformist doing this, it's not inherent to a specific kind of politics, it's inherent to a specific kind of American who does actually support imperialism
The only correct position is mine: Canada is a sovereign unique country that should remain that way, whilst adopting me, specifically (please and thank you).
If your opinion as an American on Canadian sovereignty is anything other than unconditional support, you are an imperialist hog. Your opinions about a hypothetical union state are stupid and irrelevant normally and they are violently offensive right now
I grew up near the border and spent a lot of my childhood visiting Canada, and as a result I feel a certain kinship with Canadians, but I can't fathom looking at Canada and thinking 'we're basically just one country pretending to be two for some reason.' Very weird.
I see a lot of "internationalist" leftist types taking this angle. Some variant of "Borders are like, totally fake maaaaan, wouldn't it all be better if we were all together as one world?"
No! No it wouldn't be! It would be a clusterfuck! You saying it now of all times is showing your true colors!
As it turns out, there are good reasons why groups of individuals, from the scale of villages to entire nations, want their group to be distinct and sovereign that DO in fact have good reasons to exist and shouldn't be viewed as just another "social construct to deconstruct" or whatever!
They also have wholeheartedly bought into the American exceptionalism argument. "We're so awesome and special who wouldn't want to join us" when the reality is not so special, nobody wants to join you.
the thing is i've made plenty of jokes in this vein before but i had the brains to cut it out the second that it became clear that the President of the United States actually wants to invade Canada
Comments
Yeah. Borders are silly. Nothing unique about this one.
im saying that Armand is an idiot for calling this an insight
"I'm an ass and I'm going to say the most assholic thing imaginable but in a very passive way"
And then after the backlash
"OMG we just disagree, and that's OK we can still be friends, online strangers who i don't know & will never meet🧡"
But the second people with actual power start saying that shit… well now it’s not funny. So I don’t make those jokes anymore.
That guy isn’t joking.

Now, it seems far fetched.
The first step to normalizing the annexation of another country is joking about annexing another country so shut the fuck up you stupid fucking clown
No! No it wouldn't be! It would be a clusterfuck! You saying it now of all times is showing your true colors!
we are now multiple months past that point!
